Economy vs. Business

I’m headed to London England for the Ad: Tech Conference.  Although I did just arrive last Friday from a long week, I’m somewhat looking forward to this trip.  I have never gone to Europe before so this is a first.

I find myself headed to England in Business class.  I’ve never flown this way before, so this is also a first time. Wow, what a difference from the flight I had last week.  Let’s start all the way to the beginning.

When checking in, the agents are so friendly and courteous to you. This is really rare when it comes to AC agents.

You can chill at the lounge while waiting for your flight, where they have free wireless internet, food, and alcohol.

You get first dibs, when boarding the plane.  They also offer to take your coat.

When sitting down they offer you a newspaper, snacks, juice, alcohol… And it’s all FREE! I’ll take a beer please.

You get a menu for your choice of dinner and breakfast. What! No snack mix and cold sandwiches?

The seats are comfortable, where it can recline almost all the way back. There is so much leg room.

The flight attendants, are constantly asking If your fine or need anything. Man it’s so hard to get these guys attention when sitting in Economy, and when you do they look so grumpy.

You have a personalize Entertainment system. Which means you can choose to watch what you want. Yes! I won’t get in booed this time.

And best of all, you don’t have a fat man sitting beside you taking up so much of the arm rest and looking over your shoulder. Sigh… I can get use to this.

Popeye never got E. coli from Spinach

Popeye’s food for strength was spinach and every time he ate it his arms would get big and strong. He would beat the Popeyevillains up and then Olive Oil would go ‘Oh Popeye’.   He taught us that spinach was a healthy vegetable, and that if you ate enough, it would make you stronger. He never got E. coli so why would I, right? Wrong?

E. coli recently found in spinaches has been the scare for most Americans in the past few days. The scare is now spreading across North America. I sat down for dinner on Tuesday night at a restaurant in Surrey British Columbia, the waiter had to mention that they have removed any spinach from their menu.  I thought to myself, was it that serious?  Was it worse than the Mad Cow diesis that stopped the export of cows to the south for a number of years?

With 171 sickened and 1 reported dead, it was enough for Earls and other restaurants to remove spinach from their menu.  Supermarket’s across North America has also removed this once very tasty and healthy vegetable.  They should, I don’t think anyone is going to eat spinach for a while, even Popeye!

Enron: Were They Really the Smartest Guys in the Room?

Jeff Skilling, Ken Lay, Andy Fastow: Where they really that smart?  Sure they were able to pull off the biggest corporate crime in American history. Yes they rode the great wave for a number of years and top executives cashed out with millions of dollars. And yeah, I would have to agree that they had some creative ideas to fool the world. But in the end, they failed to sustain that perception that Enron was really profitable corporation.  If you’re going to try and fuck with the system, make sure that you at least don’t get discovered.  I guess they weren’t that smart after all!

With thousands of lives effected and billions of dollars lost, these executives and those involve deserve to rot in jail.  For those who want advice on what not to do in the business world and what kind of leader to not be.  Watch the documentary Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.  It’s disturbing and yet very educational.

It Happens to Every Blogger

Ok, writers block, road blocks, whatever you want to call it. It happens to every blogger. I can’t seem to write anything. I mean, I have all these topics I want to write about, but the words are not flowing smoothly as I would like. Maybe it’s because I’ve been so busy this week and my brain is kind of fried. So I guess this is the post for now.

I know some of my readers are anxiously waiting for something new. Sorry guys, come back later, I’m sure I’ll have something meaningful to write about soon.

It Wasn’t the Worse Flight, But it May as Well Be!

After a good two months of not traveling, I find myself on a flight headed to the beautiful British Columbia.  I use to love to travel and would get excited every time I had the opportunity.  Unfortunately I don’t feel the same.  After numerous times of traveling, luggage being lost, delayed flights and going through the intense security, I find myself despising it more and more.

Take today’s flight for example.  I checked in to West Jet a couple hours before my scheduled flight.  My original seat was a window near the front of the cabin.  I personally prefer an aisle seat, only because you don’t feel like you are bothering someone when needing to use the bathroom.  Therefore I requested to have it changed to an aisle seat. The agent was kind enough to grant my request, however she forgot to mention that the seat would be at the very back of the plane beside the washroom, where the chair doesn’t recline and where the annoying flight attendants reside.  If I would have known this, I would have never requested to change seats.

I sat down thinking it wouldn’t be so bad, sure you’ll smell the scent of that plane’s bathroom every time it opened and the chair doesn’t recline back, and there is a mother and her crying baby in front of you. What am I saying; of course I mind this uncomfortable spot.

I notice that the flight was pretty much full. There was only one seat available which was a few rows up from where I was sitting. So when we were finally air born, I moved all my belongings and relocated to the available seat.  It was a middle seat but I figured it would be better.

I was dead wrong! I soon began to realize that this was a bad move. I felt like I was in a box. On my right was a 6 feet, 200 pound man reading a book and taking up so much arm space.  On my left was an average man, looking over my shoulder who can’t seem to take his eyes of this entry… (Hi Man on my left side, are you enjoying what I’m typing?)… I feel like my arms are attached to my side, they are getting tired and I will probably end this entry soon.

With all that has happened on today’s flight, I can’t say that this is the worse flight I’ve been on. I’ve had worse.  But I did learn something new today. When requesting to change seats, make sure that you are specific in what you want, if not you may find yourself in the same position I’m in right now.
