Brown Doesn’t Mean Black

Although we hear the ‘N’ word being used in many urban shows, movies or music, there still seems be a thin line between who can use it and who can’t.  Yes we see it amongst the African American community use it towards each other and although I am classified in the minority cast (Asian), I learned that it wasn’t acceptable of me to use this word. My boi who I’ve known for almost 5 years is African American.  The other day while we were joking around, I happen to drop the ‘N’ word not thinking much of it, because I thought we were cool like that. He told me to never say it and I can tell that I offended him.

Although he did not get angry or upset at me very long, I can tell that this was wrong of me to say. I learned that night, that even though I am minority and we are tight, it wasn’t cool of me to use it.  We need to understand the history of this word and what it means to the African American community. I guess the point of this post is to share this learning experience, brown doesn’t mean black.

To my boi… I know I didn’t say sorry that night, so I apologize now. Please know that I didn’t mean it like that.
