There was a young boy who wished he was good at basketball. One day he went with his friend Jay to the experts and bought a pair of basketball shoes that fit him perfectly. The young boy loved his shoes because they were the shoes of his dreams. Jay said that they are cool.
The young boy and Jay played basketball after school when they decided to have fun. Jay is the better player. Jay could dribble and lay-up and shoot the ball. Jay could outplay the young boy even when the young boy tried his best. The young boy asked Jay, “What is your secret? How come you are so good at basketball?â€Â Jay answered, “Skills.â€
Jay made the young boy practice dribbling and shooting. The young boy was tired of drills; he was beginning to lose interest in basketball. The young boy wanted to be good at ball magically. Jay heard his thoughts and said, “You want to know a secret magic trick and it works?â€Â The young boy asked, “Skills?â€Â Jay placed the ball in his hands and cherished it. Jay told him, “There was a great player who slept with his ball. If you have the ball in your hands alot, you’ll have better handling of the ball.â€
That night the young boy was so tired from playing basketball that he didn’t take a shower and kept his dirty clothes on when he went to bed. He took the basketball and his shoes to bed too. The young boy made a wish; he wished he was better than Jay at basketball. He wished he was faster than Jay, taller than Jay, and better than Jay.
The next day was Saturday. The young boy heard the doorbell. He got up from bed and opened the door. It was Jay. Jay looked at the young boy and said. “Change your clothes and take a bath.â€Â The young boy was glad to see Jay. “Is it time for basketball today?â€Â Jay replied, “Give me the ball. I’ve got more practice for you.â€
When the young boy finished his bath, Jay was sitting on the couch. The young boy said, “I’m ready.â€Â Jay told him, “We aren’t going to play basketball today.â€Â The young boy asked, “What’s going on, Jay?â€Â Jay made him listen, “I heard you last night… I’m here to tell you one of the most important things about basketball. Patience. We are still young. One day you might be taller than me, maybe even faster than me, but you won’t be better than me because you are missing patience. I made you practice because you wanted to be better but I didn’t want you to stop having fun… Remember when we bought those shoes? That was fun. And when we get a close game? That is fun.â€
Jay asked the young boy to sit down with him on the couch. The young boy needed to say something to Jay; he wanted to say that he is tired of losing. Jay said, “Don’t worry. I can feel that you are having a hard time dealing with all these sports. It seems like it’s the only thing that guys respect. But it’s cool cause you are good at sports you just aren’t great. I’m great but I’m not the greatest.â€Â
The young boy grew a smile and happily said, “I’m good?â€Â Jay answered back, “Skills.â€Â They agreed and chilled out. They passed the ball to each other in the living room and talked about girls. The young boy was happy because they were spending their childhood in such a cool way. He also felt a little sad because one day he would have to change his shoes for bigger ones. The young boy thought about all the shoes he would have to wear and the time it would take to wear them. He felt good.
