Reflections – Part One: New Years Resolutions

The New Year is here and it’s that time again, when retailers throw crazy sales, knowing that that the consumers are broke as hell from the expensive holiday that just passed.

It’s that time of the year again, when gym membership sales increases, only to lose its momentum by the time Valentines Day comes.

It’s that time of the year again where you promise yourself to be a better person, to quit smoking or to get out of debt, only to find yourself more in debt because of the therapist bills for self improvement and medication to assist the termination of smoking. Sigh…

Yes it’s that time to of the year again, when new years resolutions are put to the test.

Its lunch time on the first day back in the office from the wallet breaking, food stuffing, alcohol poisoning holiday, when someone asked the question ‘What’s your new year’s resolution for 2008?’

Ahhh… I always find this starter conversation an interesting one only because it shows you how serious people are about their lives. I heard answers like, save money, loose weight, save money, get a girl friend, go back to school, you know the typical resolutions you often hear.  Than someone said ‘Continue to Progress and improve from the previous years.’

WTH does that mean?  I thought to myself.  So I asked the question. ‘What do you mean?’ the answer I got was somewhat unclear ‘You know, just do better than the previous year.’

Ok yeah I get that part, but do you know exactly what that is. Have you zeroed in on specific things that you would like to improve on?  These were the thoughts that ran through my head, but I didn’t bother to cut through to get more of an accurate answer, I figured my colleague didn’t want to get into the details of it all.

Still I was intrigue with the questions and began to look into my own life and determine exactly what it is that needs improvement and progress. The first step was to reflect back on 2007…
