Reflections – Part One: New Years Resolutions

The New Year is here and it’s that time again, when retailers throw crazy sales, knowing that that the consumers are broke as hell from the expensive holiday that just passed.

It’s that time of the year again, when gym membership sales increases, only to lose its momentum by the time Valentines Day comes.

It’s that time of the year again where you promise yourself to be a better person, to quit smoking or to get out of debt, only to find yourself more in debt because of the therapist bills for self improvement and medication to assist the termination of smoking. Sigh…

Yes it’s that time to of the year again, when new years resolutions are put to the test.

Its lunch time on the first day back in the office from the wallet breaking, food stuffing, alcohol poisoning holiday, when someone asked the question ‘What’s your new year’s resolution for 2008?’

Ahhh… I always find this starter conversation an interesting one only because it shows you how serious people are about their lives. I heard answers like, save money, loose weight, save money, get a girl friend, go back to school, you know the typical resolutions you often hear.  Than someone said ‘Continue to Progress and improve from the previous years.’

WTH does that mean?  I thought to myself.  So I asked the question. ‘What do you mean?’ the answer I got was somewhat unclear ‘You know, just do better than the previous year.’

Ok yeah I get that part, but do you know exactly what that is. Have you zeroed in on specific things that you would like to improve on?  These were the thoughts that ran through my head, but I didn’t bother to cut through to get more of an accurate answer, I figured my colleague didn’t want to get into the details of it all.

Still I was intrigue with the questions and began to look into my own life and determine exactly what it is that needs improvement and progress. The first step was to reflect back on 2007…

How Christian Got His Groove Back

The hot summer months have passed and the cool nights seem to fill my living room, I sat on the chaise drinking a cup of hot chocolate to warm me up when I began to think about what I’ve accomplished this year. I’ve purchased my first home, got my citizenship, quit smoking and my career is hotter than ever. I couldn’t be more pleased with my recent accomplishments.

How Christian Got His Groove BackIt was than, that I began thinking about Peogles and felt a moment of sadness when I realize that it’s been a while since I posted. I seem to have this bad habit that when I try to do so many things at the same time, it’s just a matter of time before one or the other will suffer and not receive the same amount of attention as it has in the past. In this case, my blog has suffered.

I began thinking about my broken promises to my readers, more importantly the ones that have supported me.  I began thinking about the whole intention of the blog, and the purpose it was suppose to serve. What was I doing? I thought to myself. Have I given up on my idea?  Has the spirit of entrepreneurship faded? Was I going to be the perfect examples why a high percentage of blogs fail? These were questions that began to spin through my head.

I thought about how and why I let this happened. We all know that bloggin is time consuing, especially if you are going for original content with relevance. I know I was swamped during the summer months with home renovations, and yes my career is far more important than my blog as it is my only source of income. But why did I stop? I’m sure that my readers would have understood even if I posted something cheesy like…

“I’m busy working on my floors, ripping the yucky blue carpet was worse than laying down laminate floors. BTW Home Depot customer service sucks…’

I was supposed to log my progress on home renovations. I was also supposed to blog about my journey to quit smoking. What ever did happen to that? It was than that I realize that I lost my groove.  I was so busy and occupied that I’ve put blogging on hold, it was only supposed to be a few days, which than turned into weeks and followed by months. It was too long of putting it on hold that I lost my groove to post again.

So how did Christian get his groove back?  I visited old friends and surf the blogspehre for inspiration.

First and foremost, Urban Thought – Seeing your blog flourished these last couple of months ignited a flame inside of me that I once thought was out. It’s also great to see that a tint of your personality is becoming more transparent within your post. Thanks for also convincing me that back tracking on old post isn’t hard as soon as you get into it again.

Ms. Q – A woman, consultant of Asian descent. Your world has always been an interesting one. I thank you for continuing to share who you are. Oh, and I am still in awe of your writing skills.

Ricardo – You continue to unload your views and log your journey on life. Thanks for the inspiration.  Keep doing your thing. It works for you.

And to the new friends who have helped get my groove back. I thank you.

Brown Thoughts – You digitally motivate me to post on a daily basis, and not to mention you keep me up on the latest techy news.

Joanne, the laid.back buddhist – Your blog is one that is often rare in the Blogsphere, your style of journalizing is captivating and your entries of your life experiences is interesting.

And of course, how could I forget those that anonymously visit the site. I thank you for your continued support.

Until next time, be sure to come back. I promise this time that you won’t be disappointed, because Christian got his groove back ;)

What’s Your Classic Movie Profile?

I was surfing the blogging community and landed on Brown Baron’s blog, titled ‘Brown Thoughts’ His post on  ‘What’s Your Classic Movie Profile?’ caught my eye. I found this interesting because he says and I quote in Bobby’s own words…

“This test is what they use to profile FBI agents before they are accepted as trainees. I think they also test presidential candidates this way too.”

As you can see, I had to take the test and find out what my classic movie profile was. Here it is…

Sunset Boulevard

LOL… I’ve never even seen or heard of this movie, but now I’m curious to watch it.

To piggy back off Brown Baron’s post, if you take the classic movie profile test, be sure to leave a comment and let me know what you got.  It’s kind of fun.

Personal Core Values

For those that work in an office environment, you’ll be familiar with the term Corporate Core Values, which are philosophy and principles that guides the way a company does business. Core Values are meant to help a business succeed.  Some organizations have core values just for the sake of having them but rarely practices it. Fortunately, I work for an organization that actually believes in its core values and it is constantly being practiced throughout the organization.

As part to of my Leadership training offered as a University course from the Organization I am fortunate to work for, we were given an assignment to look within ourselves and determine the personal values we have for ourselves. The guiding principles we use to live our lives day by day.

This exercise was a rewarding one for me. I didn’t find it difficult because I realize that I was already living my life based on these principles I have written down.  What I found rewarding was seeing it on paper. I am now reminded that whenever I am faced with personal challenges to reflect back on the guiding principles that have taken me to where I am today, my personal core values.  I wish to share them with you all.

  • Have faith and hope, but not to be confused with optimism, that with every challenge and question, has an answer and solution

  • Be courageous and confident, even when the light is shinning on others

  • Always think the best of others. Focus on their qualities and not their deficiencies

  • Measure ones success by their character and not their assets

  • With the right intention and motivation, continue to educate, support and assist family and friends who are in need

  • Never forget where you came from. Never lose yourself. Be authentic. Be you

  • Celebrate your successes with a piece of humble pie

  • It’s about you, but it’s not all about you

  • Love yourself
